Moving from the UK to New Zealand: The Complete 2026 Guide

New Zealand offers something increasingly rare - genuine space, stunning natural beauty, and a quality of life that consistently ranks among the best in the world. For British people looking to escape the density and pace of the UK, NZ is a compelling option. But making the move means understanding the visa system, the real costs, and what daily life looks like beyond the postcards.

Visa options for UK citizens

Working Holiday Visa

UK citizens have one of the best Working Holiday arrangements with New Zealand. You can stay for up to 36 months (choosing 12, 23, or 36 months when you apply), and there are 15,000 places available in 2026.

Extensions: If you chose a 12 or 23-month visa, you can extend up to the 36-month maximum via the Subsequent Work Visa. Completing 3 months of seasonal work (horticulture, viticulture) may qualify you for an additional 3-month extension.

Skilled Migrant Category (Residence)

For Brits looking to settle permanently, the Skilled Migrant Category is the main pathway to NZ residence. You need a job offer from (or current employment with) an accredited NZ employer, and your role must meet skilled occupation requirements. The application fee is from NZD $6,450. You must be 55 or younger.

From August 2026, new Trades and Technician and Skilled Work Experience pathways are being introduced, making it easier for experienced workers to qualify even without university qualifications.

Healthcare in New Zealand

The NZ-UK reciprocal healthcare agreement covers emergency and immediately necessary hospital treatment. But routine GP visits and prescriptions are not covered under the agreement.

This is a significant adjustment from the NHS. In New Zealand, GP visits are not free - expect to pay NZD $50-$70 per visit. Prescriptions cost NZD $5 per item. Emergency hospital treatment is free. ACC covers all accidental injuries for everyone.

Once you hold a residence visa (or have lived in NZ for 2+ years on a work visa), you can enrol with a Primary Health Organisation for subsidised GP visits at NZD $20-$50.
