Parent Visa to New Zealand: What Canadians Need to Know
Moving from Canada to New Zealand is one thing. Working out how to get your parents here too is a different challenge entirely, and the answer depends heavily on timing and money, more than most people expect going in.
The Parent Resident Visa category is open, which puts New Zealand in a better position than some other destinations right now, but it's capped, income-gated, and the selection process is changing. This guide covers what's actually true today, not what used to be true a year or two ago.
The Parent Resident Visa: open, but capped at 2,500 a year
The selection process itself is changing from 5 October 2026: currently, places are worked through in the order applications were received, but under the new hybrid model, around 90% of Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be selected in date order and around 10% through a ballot. EOIs will also stop expiring automatically after two years, existing EOI holders move into the new system without resubmitting anything, though they'll need to confirm their interest every two years to stay in the pool. Immigration New Zealand's own announcement is blunt about what this does and doesn't fix: demand is expected to keep exceeding the number of places available.
The sponsor income test: the real barrier for most families
You, as the sponsor, need to meet a minimum income threshold, verified against two of the past three years of your own Inland Revenue-recorded taxable income, not projections or overseas income. From 30 April 2026, these thresholds increased, tied to the median wage rising to NZD $35.00 an hour. Reported figures put the new threshold at roughly NZD $109,200 a year to sponsor one parent and around NZD $145,600 for two, rising by a further ~$36,400 for each additional parent, though we'd recommend confirming the exact current figures on Immigration New Zealand's own site before you rely on them for planning, since this guide could not independently verify the precise dollar table at publication. Applications lodged before 30 April 2026 aren't affected by the increase.
The faster, cheaper option: Parent Boost Visitor Visa
If the wait or the income threshold rules out the resident visa for now, the Parent Boost Visitor Visa is the practical alternative, a temporary, multiple-entry, long-stay visa that lets your parents live in New Zealand for extended periods without granting residency. Its income thresholds also rose from 30 April 2026, so check current figures rather than an older quote. It won't get your parents permanent residency, but it's a genuine way to have them there for long stretches while you decide whether the resident visa queue is worth joining.
