Shipping Your Life from Canada to New Zealand: Costs, Customs, and What to Know

Moving your stuff from Canada to New Zealand means shipping it roughly 12,000 km across the Pacific. The good news is that NZ customs are straightforward for personal effects, and transit times from Vancouver are shorter than you might expect. Here's everything you need to know about getting your belongings there.

Your Shipping Options

Full Container Load (FCL)

A 20-foot container fits the contents of a 2-3 bedroom home. A 40-foot container handles a larger house with furniture. You get the whole container to yourself, which means less handling and lower risk of damage. This is the best option if you're moving a full household.

Less Than Container Load (LCL)

Your belongings share a container with other shipments. You pay for the volume you use. Good for smaller moves (a few boxes and some furniture). Cheaper than FCL but takes longer because the container needs to fill up before it ships, and there's more handling at each end.

Air Freight

Fast (5-10 days) but expensive. Only makes sense for essential items you need immediately, like work equipment, medications, or a few suitcases' worth of belongings. Most people ship a few boxes by air and send the rest by sea.

Excess Baggage Services

Companies like Send My Bag ship boxes door-to-door. You pack, they collect from your Canadian address and deliver to your NZ address. Good for 5-15 boxes. Simpler than dealing with a freight company for a small move.

Costs

These costs cover ocean freight only. Budget an additional CAD 1,000-2,500 for origin services (packing, loading, documentation) and NZD 1,500-3,000 for destination services (customs clearance, delivery, unpacking) at the NZ end.
