Moving from the UK to Australia: The Complete Guide

Moving from the UK to Australia: The Complete Guide

The UK to Australia move is one of the oldest and best-established migration routes in the world, and it's also one of the more paperwork-heavy corridors on this site. Unlike New Zealanders, British citizens don't get an automatic visa on arrival. Most routes run through a competitive, points-tested system, and getting the sequencing right (skills assessment first, then points, then application) makes the difference between a smooth process and a frustrating one.

This guide covers the main pathways, the practical groundwork, and the mistakes that cost UK migrants the most time.

Why Brits Choose Australia

The appeal is well worn territory: warmer climate, a strong job market for skilled occupations, and one genuine financial advantage that surprises a lot of UK migrants once they run the numbers, compulsory superannuation. The super guarantee (currently over 11% employer-paid, on top of salary) is a meaningful long-term benefit that typical UK employment doesn't match. Median full-time salaries in Australia also generally run higher than UK equivalents across most skilled occupations, though it's worth running your specific occupation and target city through a proper comparison rather than assuming a like-for-like uplift.

One quirk works entirely in UK applicants' favour: as a British passport holder, you're automatically treated as having "functional English" for visa purposes, which removes an entire hurdle other nationalities have to clear.

Step One: Work Out Which Visa Pathway Fits

Most people who move from the UK to Australia permanently use one of three General Skilled Migration visas, all of which run through SkillSelect and all of which need a positive skills assessment first.

Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)

The cleanest option: no sponsor needed, permanent from the day it's granted. It's also the most competitive, since anyone eligible can apply. Your occupation needs to sit on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List, which changes periodically, so check the current version before assuming your job qualifies. The legal minimum is 65 points to lodge an Expression of Interest, but genuine invitations for popular occupations (accounting, software engineering) regularly land at 85-95, so calculate your realistic score against recent invitation rounds for your occupation, not the legal floor.

State Nomination (190) and Regional (491)

The 190 adds 5 points in exchange for a state or territory nominating you, usually with a commitment to live there initially. The 491 is a five-year provisional visa tied to a regional area, adds 15 points, and offers one of the more accessible routes for a points-tight occupation, with a pathway to permanent residence after three years of regional living and minimum income.

Employer Sponsorship and the Working Holiday Visa

If you already have a confirmed job offer, the Skills in Demand visa (482) or Employer Nomination Scheme (186) can be faster than the points system because you skip the competitive invitation round. If you're under 35 and want the simplest short-term entry point, the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) remains the easiest route in, with extensions available for a second and third year under certain conditions.

Every skilled pathway starts with a skills assessment from the relevant assessing body for your occupation (Engineers Australia, CPA Australia, TRA for trades, and so on). This step alone can take several months and needs detailed employment reference letters, so get those from current and former UK employers before you resign, not after.

Sorting Your Finances Before You Go

Open an Australian bank account in advance. Several major banks let UK migrants start the account process before arrival, which removes a lot of first-week friction.

Understand tax residency early. Once you establish Australian tax residency you're liable on worldwide income, and the ATO's residency tests don't always align neatly with when you feel settled.

Get advice on your UK pension within your first six months. UK pensions don't automatically combine with Australian super. A transfer is technically possible via a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), but it's only generally tax-effective within six months of becoming an Australian tax resident, after which unfavourable tax treatment can apply. Many UK migrants simply leave pensions in place and build super separately, which avoids the complexity entirely at the cost of managing two retirement pots long-term. Either way, this is a decision worth a licensed adviser, not a blog post.

Accommodation: Where to Start

Rental prices in Sydney and Melbourne broadly rival London for equivalent inner-city living, while Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth generally sit closer to mid-size UK city rents. What catches most UK migrants off guard isn't the price, it's the process: competitive markets, agent-run inspections, and an expectation of a strong local rental history or references you won't have as a brand-new arrival. Budget time and a stronger-than-usual application (extra bond, a reference letter from a UK landlord or agent) to offset that.

Healthcare: NHS to Medicare

UK citizens get access to Medicare under a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, which is a genuinely useful safety net, but it isn't a full NHS replacement and there are real gaps in what's covered. Confirm your specific coverage rather than assuming NHS-equivalent cover starts the day you land.

The Logistics Checklist

Here's what to work through in the months before you leave:

  • Get a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for your occupation
  • Lodge your Expression of Interest through SkillSelect once your points are realistic for your occupation
  • Gather detailed UK employment reference letters before you resign
  • Open an Australian bank account where your chosen bank allows pre-arrival setup
  • Get advice on your UK pension inside your first six months as an Australian tax resident
  • Compare Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane against your occupation and budget, not the national averages
  • Sort household shipping or a moving-and-selling plan for your belongings
  • If you have pets, start the import process months in advance, it takes longer from the UK than from New Zealand

The Biggest Mistakes Brits Make

Underestimating the skills assessment timeline. This step alone can take months, and it gates everything else. Start it as early as realistically possible.

Calculating points against the legal minimum instead of real invitation rounds. 65 points gets you in the pool. For popular occupations, actual invitations regularly sit at 85-95. Check recent rounds for your specific occupation before assuming you're competitive.

Missing the UK pension transfer window. The most tax-effective QROPS transfer window is roughly six months from becoming an Australian tax resident, and that clock can start before you feel settled. Get advice early, not once you've noticed a problem.

Assuming Medicare works like the NHS. The Reciprocal Health Care Agreement is genuinely useful, but it has real gaps. Check what's actually covered before you rely on it.
