UK to Australia: Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
Australia Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417)
Eligibility, real costs and the UK-specific rules that most generic 417 guides get wrong. Figures as at 9 September 2026.
British passport holders get a noticeably better version of Australia's subclass 417 Working Holiday visa than most other nationalities, under the 2023 Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement. You can apply for up to three separate 12-month visas, and from 1 July 2024 you're exempt from the specified regional-work requirement most other nationalities need to complete before a second or third visa. Most generic 417 content online doesn't mention this, because it's written for a global audience.
This guide sets out eligibility, the genuine cost of applying, health cover under the UK-Australia Reciprocal Health Care Agreement, banking, and a stage-by-stage checklist. Facts below are corroborated across multiple independent migration-adviser sources where Australia's own government sites blocked direct access; anything less certain is flagged as such rather than stated as fact. This is general information, not migration advice; see the disclaimer at the bottom of this page.

18-35 inclusive for UK passport holders (extended from the standard 18-30 band since 1 July 2023, under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement)
Maximum duration
12 months per visa; UK passport holders can apply for up to three separate 12-month visas, not required to be consecutive (36 months total)

Eligibility
- Aged 18 to 35 inclusive as a UK passport holder, an extended age band that applies specifically to UK citizens under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement (most other 417 nationalities get 18-30).
- Hold a valid UK passport.
- No job offer is required before you apply.
- Up to three separate 12-month visas are available to UK passport holders, each a fresh grant, with no requirement to hold them consecutively.
- For your second and third visa, you're exempt from the regional specified-work requirement other 417 nationalities must complete, since 1 July 2024. This is the single most valuable, most commonly missed fact for this corridor.
- Reported minimum funds: around AUD $5,000 in accessible funds. This figure is repeated consistently across secondary migration-adviser sources but wasn't confirmable against a primary Department source in this research; confirm it directly before you travel.
How to apply
- 1
Understand the UK-specific rules before reading generic 417 advice
Most 417 content online describes 88 and 179 days of regional work as mandatory for a second and third visa. That requirement doesn't apply to UK passport holders applying on or after 1 July 2024. Know this before you plan your trip around farm work you don't actually need to do.
- 2
Gather evidence of accessible funds
Around AUD $5,000 is the commonly reported minimum, though this isn't primary-source confirmed. Treat it as a starting point and confirm the current figure before you travel.
- 3
Apply online via ImmiAccount
Apply from outside Australia. No job offer is required.
- 4
Complete the health and character declaration
Most UK applicants aren't asked for a medical exam or chest X-ray, since the UK isn't a high-TB-risk country for this purpose, but a case-by-case referral is always possible.
- 5
Set up your Australian-dollar banking before you fly
Open a Wise account from the UK for a working AUD account, or start a Commonwealth Bank application online up to 14 days before arrival if that's your preferred major bank.
- 6
Apply for your Tax File Number once you're physically in Australia
You can only apply once you've arrived. Do it in your first few days, since it takes up to 4 weeks and employers must withhold tax at the top marginal rate if you haven't provided one within a reasonable window.
- 7
Enrol in Medicare under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement
This gives you access to medically necessary care while your visa is valid, but it doesn't cover ambulance callouts, dental or private treatment, worth planning travel insurance around.
Financial & health requirements
Visa application fee (first visa)
AUD $840, effective 1 July 2026 (up from AUD $670 before that date). Paid directly to the Department of Home Affairs, not to Move Between Guide.
Visa application fee (second and third visa)
Reported at AUD $1,000 each per most sources checked, though one source suggests it repeats at $840. This is an unresolved conflict in the secondary sources; confirm the current fee directly with the Department or a migration agent before relying on either figure.
Accessible funds
Reported at around AUD $5,000, evidenced by bank statements, payslips or similar. This figure is secondary-source only, not confirmed against a primary Department page in this research; confirm before you travel.
Tax File Number
Free. Apply online once you're physically in Australia; takes up to 4 weeks to arrive by post to your Australian address.
Practical checklist
- Learn the UK-specific rules first: the extended 18-35 age band and the regional-work exemption for your second and third visa (most generic 417 guides don't mention either).
- Budget AUD $840 for your first visa fee, and treat $1,000 as an unconfirmed estimate for a second or third.
- Confirm the current accessible-funds requirement (reported around AUD $5,000) before you travel.
- Set up a Wise account before you fly for a working AUD account from day one, or start a Commonwealth Bank application online up to 14 days before arrival.
- Apply for your Tax File Number as soon as you're physically in Australia, ideally within your first few days, to avoid emergency-rate tax withholding.
- Enrol in Medicare under the UK-Australia Reciprocal Health Care Agreement promptly after arrival, and consider travel insurance for what it doesn't cover (ambulance, dental, private treatment).
- Remember Condition 8547: a maximum of 6 months' work with any single employer, regardless of your nationality or specified-work exemption.
- If you want a second or third visa, you don't need to complete regional work, just reapply and pay the fee, a genuine advantage UK passport holders get that most other nationalities don't.
Important
The AUD $840 first-visa application fee (and the AUD $1,000 typically reported for a second or third visa) is paid by you directly to the Australian Department of Home Affairs. It is not paid to, and not included in, anything Move Between Guide sells. Figures as at 9 September 2026, following a fee increase on 1 July 2026; several figures in this guide (the second/third visa fee and the AUD $5,000 funds requirement) rely on secondary migration-adviser sources rather than a primary Department page, since homeaffairs.gov.au blocked direct access during this research. Confirm current fees and requirements directly with the Department of Home Affairs or a registered migration agent before you apply.
Move Between Guide is an Australian company (ABN 83 187 340 832). This is general information, not migration advice. Visa requirements and eligibility depend on your individual circumstances and rules change over time. For advice specific to your situation, speak with a MARA-registered migration agent.
Move your money and gear the smart way
Wise - an AUD account before you fly
Open a Wise account from the UK for a working Australian-dollar account before you land, the same sequencing that works for the AU-to-UK direction.
TorFX - transferring larger sums to Australia
Worth comparing against your bank if you're bringing savings across for your move.
Currencies Direct - GBP to AUD transfers
Another option worth comparing for larger GBP-to-AUD transfers.
Instarem - sending money to Australia
Compare Instarem's rate alongside Wise, TorFX and Currencies Direct before you transfer your savings.
Send My Bag - ship excess luggage ahead
If you're over your airline's baggage allowance, shipping ahead can work out cheaper than excess-baggage fees at check-in.
